Herbert Augustus Blaize known to his supporters a Herbie was born on February 26, 1918 on the tiny island of Carriacou in Grenada.
Blaize graduated as a solicitor after the completion of a Law correspondence course. He entered the political arena in 1957 and three years later he was appointed Chief Minister.
In 1961 the Grenada United Labor Party lead by Eric Gairy defeated Blaize. But, the British reappointed Blaize as Chief Minister one year later after Gairy was removed following accusation of corruption (known to Grenadians as squandermania).
Grenada achieved Internal Self Government (State Hood) in 1967 under Blaize. But later that year Gairy defeated him in the election.
In 1976 Blaize's Grenada National Party joined forces with the New Jewel Movement (NJM) in a futile attempt to defeat Gairy.
In 1979 the NJM staged a coup that overthrew Gairy. All political parties were silenced by the NJM and Blaize kept a very low profile on Carriacou.
After the American invasion of Grenada in 1983 the US Government fearing the return of Gairy created the New National Party in which the then aging Blaize was install as Prime Minister.
Blaize eventually lost control of his NNP and formed a new party TNP to hold on to power. After a rough industrial struggle with the Teachers Union for salary increases supported by the opposition. To settle the dispute Blaize sold the Grenada Telephone Company for less than it's value. He pleaded that he did not have the money to pay.
On December 19, 1989 Blaize died quietly in St. George's leaving Ben Jones to carry on the fight against an increasing opposition.
