Profile of Albert Duncan

 
 

 

Dr. Albert Andrew Duncan was born in the beautiful village of Soubise, St. Andrew’s, Grenada.  He started studying at college level in 1982 at La Universidad de Camaguey and at I.S.C.A.H University, both in Cuba.  He later attended Alabama A&M University where in 1988 he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Agribusiness, graduating Summa Cum Laude. One year later, he received his Master of Science degree in Agribusiness Management from the said institution.

 In 1996 he attended the New School University, New York, where he received an M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics, specializing in international economics and economic development.

Dr. Duncan’s civil service to Grenada began in 1979 when he was employed as a school teacher at the St. Andrew’s Methodist school. He later taught at the Grenville Secondary School and as a part-time lecturer at the Mirabeau Farm School of the T.A. Marryshow Community College. From 1990 to 1999, he worked as Registrar of Cooperatives and Friendly Societies in Grenada where he headed the government’s Cooperatives Department charged with the responsibility of supervising all co-operative organizations and credit unions in the country.  In 1993, he also worked as an Agribusiness Consultant with the UWI/OAS where he coordinated a Caribbean regional agribusiness workshop. While in the U.S, Dr. Duncan has held teaching positions in many colleges, including University of Phoenix, Berkeley College, New York City and with the City University of New York. At present he has a full-time teaching position at the Borough of Manhattan Community College.

While in New York, Dr. Duncan has played an active role in community development. From the late 1990s, he has been an active member of the Grenada Independence Awards Dinner and Ball Committee. He is also the president of the Grenada-American Ex-Teachers’ Association, an esteemed organization that is, for many years, an integral part of youth development in the New York community.

Over the years Dr. Duncan has received numerous awards.  These include:  USAID scholarship to study at Alabama A&M University, 1985; the Key to, and Honorary Council Member of the City of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, 1985;  Honorary State Representative, State of Louisiana, 1985; OAS fellowship to study at the New School University, 1997;  dissertation fellowship, New School University, 1999; nominated for Who’s Who Among American Teachers, 2002. Albert is also a sport enthusiast. On his graduation from secondary school, he was awarded Most Sporting All rounder. In 1983, he was a member of the University of Camaguey table tennis team.  His essay in the popular book entitled Baseball and Philosophy, is indicative of his diverse interest in sporting activities.

Dr. Duncan is married and with his wife Julie, they have two children, Andrea and Andre’
