Finance Minister Nazim Burke

Finance Minister Nazim Burke

St. George’s. GRENADA: – It is public knowledge that the previous government’s woeful and even reckless management of the spice island’s economy has left the country in a state of bankruptcy. This Friday Mr. Nazim Burke, the island’s young finance minister (NDC) will unveil his first budget to a nation eagerly anticipating what’s next.

Short of a miracle, Mr. Burke will have to grow an economy and create jobs with no money. It is believed that Mr. Burke will deploy heavy doses of Keynesian economic principles. In real terms the NDC is caught between a rock – the needs of international institutions and a hard place – the demands of the Grenadian population.

Keynesian students place the emphasis on the role of government in stimulating and growing the economy. (According to Keynesian economics the state should stimulate economic growth and improve stability in the private sector – through, for example, interest rates, taxation and public projects)

There is one major problem in countries like Grenada they have no reserves and are dependant on foreign donors therefore despite the creativity of finance minister Burke, ways will have to be found to finance public sector projects.
